Place where the fire smouldered

A man would not have many things without fire. The element of fire was used from the onset of mankind. Different fire rituals are performed until these days. From sacral altar rituals to ritual purifications of the space. Kretinga district invites to familiarise with the places in which the worldview of the ancestors and the innovations inspired by the ancient wisdom reveal.

The true embodiment of the ancestors’ worldview can be seen in the Baltic Mythology Park. The ancient cultural values of Balts are preserved in the park. The mission of the park is to develop public-spirited people of Lithuania, promote patriotism, contribute to the cultural activities of the State, encourage cultural communication between the Baltic nations and tribes (regions). In the educational park, you can not only familiarise yourself with the mythological worldview of the Baltic nations expressed in the perception of the global framework of the Baltic nations through signs and calendar in vertical and horizontal projections but also to see it.

The friendship of the worldview of the Balts and the Christian worldview is very clear in Alka Hill of Naujoji Įpiltis. Today a wooden chapel stands there. In ancient times, there was a pagan temple, i.e. shrine hill, on Alka Hill. It is told that in antiquity sacrifices to the ancient gods were made and priestesses would stoke up and foster the sacred fire on the hill. The legends tell that later the shrine vanished into thin air. The shrine hill has been respected since ancient times: after the introduction of Christianity, people still gather here to celebrate outings, sing litanies to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In ancient times, youngsters called up for military service would gather at the chapel to pray; they would leave flowers and wreaths of tree branches here. The local residents who would suffer from scabies or other not serious diseases would come to the hill to get rid of the disease; they would crawl around the chapel on the knees, pray and donate money.

If you visit Kretinga district and want to feel the real power of fire, you must visit the health promotion complex “Holiday Park” (Aostogų parkas). You will leave the sauna feeling fresher and full of energy.

And this is not the only place in Kretinga district in which you can feel the power of heat, recover strength and accumulate energy.
