In preparing the event program for the Youth Capital of Lithuania 2025, the strongest qualities of the district’s youth were highlighted – the young people of Kretinga are creative, knowledge-driven, enjoy sports, and actively spend their time in various ways. To emphasize these qualities, four logos reflecting them were created. These logos were also designed by the youth – students of the Kretinga S. Daukantas Gymnasium. Furthermore, to further highlight the distinctiveness of the young people in Kretinga District, it was decided to hold not one, as usual, but four opening events for the Youth Capital of Lithuania 2025, each linked to the aforementioned qualities of the district’s youth.
The events of the Youth Capital of Lithuania will start on January 10 with the largest square game competition in Lithuania – at least 400 people are expected to play the game in the same hall at the same time, aiming for a national record. Overall, this quarter will be dedicated to active youth: from January to March, young people will be invited to the “Splash& Dance” dance and water fiesta at the Kretinga Sports Center pool, nature hikes, various relay races for young families with children, and other active leisure activities.
The second quarter of the year will open with the youth talent evening “Upwards 2025,” while the highlight of the April–June events will be the North European Amateur Theater Alliance (NEATA) Youth Theater Festival. The event, taking place from May 9–11, is expected to gather around 200 participants from 9 foreign countries. During the quarter dedicated to creative youth, there will also be the international youth jazz festival “Kretinga Jazz,” an art plein air, open-air film screenings, a creative family evening, and an unconventional evening with DJ music and other entertainment at the Winter Garden.
The third opening of the Youth Capital of Lithuania 2025 is scheduled for July 6 – the Day of the Coronation of King Mindaugas of Lithuania. On that day, a fun picnic “Get Comfortable” will bring together young families. Additionally, from July to September, there will be events organized by the contemporary art platform “Kub’Art,” a skateboarding and BMX bike tournament, various free activities at the Kretinga Sports Center, a family movie night at the sports center pool, a street sports and culture event “Move Your Joints” in Jokūbavas, free exercise classes for mothers, and other events aimed at young people who enjoy an active lifestyle.
Moreover, the Kretinga District Municipality plans to build a mountain bike park, which would surpass others already existing in Lithuania in size, and it would be accessible not only to the residents of Kretinga but also to the youth from surrounding municipalities. The opening of the mountain bike park is planned for the fall of 2025.
In the final quarter of the year, from October to December, the focus will be on knowledge-seeking youth. This quarter will open with the “Challenge to Youth” campaign. Throughout the three months, curious young people will be invited to participate in activities promoting citizenship and tolerance, leadership development, various training sessions, a youth opportunities fair, and more.
In 2025, when Kretinga was granted the title of Youth Capital of Lithuania, young people living here are invited not only to participate in events but also to propose their ideas, which will become a commitment for current and future politicians to continue active youth policy. Young people living abroad are encouraged to discover the Kretinga region and perhaps even settle here.
Kretinga became the second Youth Capital of Lithuania, taking over this title from Marijampolė.
