Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

Darbėnai Town is famous for its Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, i.e. a feast in honour of the apostles Peter and Paul. This is a feast uniting the whole community and taking place at the end of June. This tradition has probably come about already in the 19th century when the name of the afore-mentioned Saints was given to the new masonry church built in Darbėnai. However, the history of Darbėnai church started much earlier. It is predicted that in the 17th century the first church in Darbėnai was order by J. K. Chodkevičius. Other state that the church was built by ordinary peasants. Probably, when the church disappeared, a new wooden church was built instead of the church which burnt down during the uprising. And then, in 1942, Mykolas Tiškevičius, the owner of Darbėnai and the grandfather of the founder of the future Palanga resort Juozapas ordered to built a church which once burnt was rebuilt again and still embelishes Darbėnai.
