Saint George Chapel

More than one historical grave or monument can be found in the old cemetery of Kretinga. One of such monuments is Saint George Chapel. The chapel which can be seen today is a copy of the chapel built in the cemetery at the beginning of the 19th century. In the 19th century, the chapel which was first wooden, later, made of stonework served as a place for funeral of the dead. in 1891, the owner of Kretinga manor and the founder of Palanga resort count Juozapas Tiškevičius was buried in the chapel. Only after two years, his sarcophagus was moved to the new chapel-mausoleum of Tiškevičius. For a very short period, when in 1941 the fire damaged the church, service took place in the chapel. As the war was going to the end, the Soviet people ruined Saint George chapel. The ruins were brought back to like at the start of independence, i.e. the chapel was reconstructed according to the design of the architect Edmundas Giedrimas.
