Saint George Chapel

Several historical graves and monuments can be found in the old cemetery of Kretinga. One of these monuments is Saint George Chapel. The chapel seen today is a replica of the one built at the beginning of the 19th century. Originally, the chapel was wooden and later rebuilt in stone, serving as a place for funerals. In 1891, the owner of Kretinga Manor and founder of the Palanga resort, Count Juozapas Tiškevičius, was buried in the chapel. Two years later, his sarcophagus was moved to the new Tiškevičius chapel-mausoleum. For a short period, after a fire damaged the church in 1941, services were held in the chapel. Toward the end of the war, the Soviet authorities damaged Saint George Chapel. After Lithuania regained independence, the chapel was restored to its original appearance according to the design of architect Edmundas Giedrimas.
