Darbėnai cemetery chapel

Kretinga region is rich in wooden chapels; this is so characteristic of Samogitia. One of such Samogitian chapels can be visited in the old cemetery of Darbėnai. The wooden and really not the smallest chapel dates back more than one century. It emerged at the beginning of the 20th century by virtue of the carpenter and cabinetmaker Juozas Bendikas and the believers of the parish. The chapel the height of which is 9 metres is covered by an ancient shingle roof, has a small tower decorated by plates carved with ornaments; such construction works of small architecture distinguishes from all other objects of the cemetery. A splendid chorus balcony and a small wooden altar inside the chapel fascinate people. It is also told that once the chapel had organs. The chapel may be visited on All Souls' Day; on that day it is open because the local people pray for the dead.
