Earls Tiškevičius family chapel

In 2014, the chapel of the counts Tiškevičius located in the old cemetery of Kretinga revealed a sensation. Sarcophagi of the family of the counts Tiškevičius were found in the cellar of the chapel, in the concrete bases. The carried out research has disclosed that before the war the count Aleksandras hid the remains of his parents, two children, sister-in-law and governess. Today, the restored sarcophagi may be seen in the mausoleum of the restored chapel. The chapel itself, i.e. an elegant neo-Gothic chapel with sky-reaching peaks, is also worth attention, since it is the first sacral building which was designed in Lithuania by the Swedish architect Karl Eduard Strandmann. The vaults of the chapel were like a heaven with stars; a fragment of the painting may be seen till the present days visiting the death monument which is probably the most beautiful monument in Kretinga.
