Earls Tiškevičius family chapel

In 2014, the chapel of the Tiškevičius family, located in the old cemetery of Kretinga, revealed a remarkable discovery. Sarcophagi of the Tiškevičius family were found in the cellar of the chapel, within its concrete foundations. Research revealed that before the war, Count Aleksandras had hidden the remains of his parents, two children, sister-in-law, and governess there. Today, the restored sarcophagi can be seen in the mausoleum of the reconstructed chapel. The chapel itself—an elegant neo-Gothic building with sky-reaching spires—is also worth attention, as it was the first sacred building in Lithuania designed by the Swedish architect Karl Eduard Strandmann. The chapel’s vaults once resembled a starry heaven, and a fragment of the painting can still be seen to this day when visiting the funerary monument, which is considered the most beautiful monument in Kretinga.
