Kretinga Manor Watermill

More than one "first" is recorded in the history of Kretinga Manor. One such milestone is the establishment of the first hydroelectric power plant in Lithuania. In 1878, it was installed in the manor’s watermill by Count Juozapas Tiškevičius. The count, who was fond of innovations, wanted electric bulbs to light the Winter Garden and the manor itself. Historically, the watermill is much older than the technical inventions it housed. The mill was mentioned in documents dating back to the 17th century. The building’s appearance also reflects its age: it is made of stone and masonry, while the framework was built during the period when the Tiškevičius family managed it. Between the two World Wars, the Tiškevičius family made greater use of the mill premises, incorporating an oil refilling company and candy workshops. Today, visitors can still taste sweets produced in the traditional manner. On the top floor of the building, an ethnographic exhibition titled "On the Solar Circle" (Saulės ratu) invites visitors to experience the life of an ancient peasant.
