Kurmaičiai Hillfort

Kurmaičiai hillfort also called "Pilalė" was built at the confluence of Akmena and Pilsupis, on the left bank of Akmena. The hillfort was used at the end of the first millenium BC and the 1st-3rd centuries. The hillfort is a part of the ancient settlement which also includes Kurmaičiai grave field and burial mounds of the same period. After impounding the river Akmena, a 82 ha pond the water of which washes the slopes of the hillfort was formed. The slope above water is affected by surface erosion due to waves, at some places the slope is affected by deeper erosion.
