Place of the Old Town of Salantai

The first Jewish people settled in Salantai Town in the 17th century. They settled around the marketplace, the synagogue and near highways. The majority of houses of Jews burnt during a fire in 1941. After the fire, masonry 1-2 storey residential and commercial buildings were constructed and the majority of them survived until these days. One of such buildings is the residential house and flax warehouse which belonged to the flax merchant Mauša Gitkinas at the start of M. Valančiaus Street (today, cafe "Pakalnutė").
