Salantai Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

It is impossible to confuse Salantai Church with any other church; it is built on a hill and has two towers, making it visible from a great distance. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is famous for its two towers, each even 70 metres high, and for a painting dating back to the 17th century. This church is not the first church in Salantai; its predecessors were small and wooden. The current impressive church was designed by the Swedish architect Karlas Eduardas Strandmanas. “Sister” churches designed by the same architect stand in Palanga, Švėkšna, Ylakiai, and other places. Salantai Church, built at the beginning of the 20th century, preserved the 17th-century painting of the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus from its predecessor and is decorated with five wooden altars and graceful pulpits.
